Middle School Math

At Cornerstone, students build a strong mathematical foundation through an incremental approach to learning. With information presented in manageable segments, and ongoing review of previously learned concepts, students master material and retain the computation skills and math concepts that are necessary for more advanced math.

Grade 5: Saxon Math 6/5

Students begin with a review of foundational math concepts. They learn how to apply mathematical tools and techniques to real-life situations using word problems. The course of study covers:

  • advanced divisibility concepts
  • multiplication
  • integers
  • prime and composite numbers
  • powers
  • roots
  • probability
  • statistics
  • patterns and sequences
  • geometry and measurements
  • ratios

 

Grade 6: Saxon Math 7/6 

Using Saxon’s Math 7/6, students are introduced to the concepts, procedures, and vocabulary they need to be successful in upper-level algebra and geometry courses. The course of study covers:

  • compound interest
  • functions and coordinate graphing
  • integers
  • exponential expressions
  • divisibility concepts
  • prime factorization
  • ratios and proportions
  • radius, circumference and pi
  • statistics and probability
  • complementary and supplementary angles

 

Grade 7: Saxon Math 8/7

Students review concepts such as arithmetic calculation, measurements, geometry and other skills, while new concepts are introduced such as:·        

  • pre-algebra        
  • exponents     
  • scientific notation     
  • complex fractions       
  • base 2        
  • unit conversion     
  • slope      
  • graphing        
  • ratios        
  • probability and statistics 

 

Grade 8: Saxon Algebra 1 

In the Algebra 1 course, students develop the understanding they need to resolve more complex problems and functions. The course of study covers topics including:       

  • signed numbers, exponents, and roots      
  • absolute value     
  • equations and inequalities       
  • scientific notations        
  • unit conversions        
  • polynomials        
  • graphs
