Developmental Kindergarten Philosophy

We believe that children develop at their own pace, with physical, emotional and intellectual development each playing an important role in school readiness and success. At Cornerstone, we have a two year developmental kindergarten model with students beginning as young as 4 years 6 months old (turning five by December 31st ). Readiness for Cornerstone’s developmental kindergarten program is determined by a parent evaluation, a previous school evaluation (if applicable), and an in-house entrance screening provided by Cornerstone faculty.

Our curriculum follows a clearly defined developmental scope and sequence using ABeka Book’s K-4, K-5, and Advanced K-5 materials. The goal is to move each child as far forward in his or her development as possible, providing a sure foundation of skills and equipping them for better learning. We recognize that some children, especially those entering at a younger age, may need additional time to mature in various areas before moving on to first grade.

The aim is for students to master the standards in the K-5 curriculum by the end of their kindergarten experience, whether that is in one or two years.  Teachers work closely with parents throughout the year to determine the best sequence for each child, whether that be promotion to first grade or a two year kindergarten experience.
