Cornerstone partners with the Franklin YMCA for Physical Education. Students in grades 1-4 are transported by bus to the Y, a quick ride up the hill, for weekly PE classes. The YMCA provides qualified staff to work with Cornerstone’s students on fitness, team building, and movement skills. Through our partnership with the Franklin YMCA, our elementary students are able to use the gym as part of their regular school schedule. In addition to traditional team sports, gymnastics, and other fitness games, students participate in the President’s Physical Fitness Challenge. Our kindergarten students have several opportunities each day to get out of the classroom to run and play. Gross motor skills are built through indoor and outdoor activities designed to engage and challenge them. Students learn the importance of physical activity through activities like jump roping or playing a group game like kickball. Thanks to a generous grant, Cornerstone completed a Trek Across America where students and families received pedometers and logged their steps, meeting our challenge to make it all the way across the United States in our six-week timeframe. |
